Project Overview
In August 2023,ย JWB Civil Engineeringย completed a significantย ground stabilisationย project forย Christian Brotherโs College, Cork. The site featured a large embankment that required reinforcement to ensure long-term safety and stability. The design for the works came fromย DL Consultant Engineers, Ballincollig.
Choosing the Right Stabilisation Method
After careful site assessment, our team selectedย soil nailingย as the most effective solution. This technique involves inserting steel bars (nails) into the soil at regular intervals. The nails are then grouted into place, creating a reinforced mass that resists movement. This method is especially effective for steep slopes and retaining structures where traditional retaining walls may not be practical.
Benefits of Soil Nailing
Soil nailing offers several advantages:
- Minimal excavation required, reducing disruption
- Strong, long-lasting slope stability
- Cost-effective compared to alternative retaining systems
- Adaptable to a wide range of soil and rock conditions
In this case, the process strengthened the embankment without altering the appearance of the surrounding landscape. As a result, the school grounds remain safe for students and staff while maintaining their natural look.
